valentine pencils

**Note: Click here for an updated Valentine Pencil post.**

I posted these pencils two years ago here. I can't take credit for the original idea. I first saw a project like this in the gallery at ScrapMatters, and the person who posted them there first saw them on another girl's blog, and I think she saw them somewhere else, too... Anyway, I guess somebody somewhere first came up with this creative idea. :) I was also lucky enough to have a back-to-school version of the pencils I made featured in the September 2010 issue of Creating Keepsakes and through CK on a local TV show, Studio 5.

I would link you to the tutorial I followed, but I never did find directions to follow, so I just made them by looking at the ones I saw. Since I first posted them on my blog, several people have e-mailed or left comments asking for directions, so I thought I would post how I made them to make it easier for anyone wanting to try these out this year. I wanted to make a photo tutorial, but I just don't know that I'm going to find the time before Valentine's Day, so here are some step-by-step directions.

Valentine Rolo Pencil Instructions

1. Cut a 3.5”x4.5” piece of yellow cardstock. Make score lines every 1/4 inch (the score lines should be parallel with the long side of the cardstock). Using pinking shears or decorative pinking scissors, cut a small strip off the short side of the cardstock. Wrap this piece around the Rolo’s, and use adhesive to hold together.

2. Cut a 3.5”x3/8” piece of pink cardstock. Wrap this around the top of the Rolo’s for the edge of the pink eraser. Trace the top of the Rolo’s on pink cardstock and cut out to get the top of your eraser. Stick this on top with adhesive.

3. Cut a 3.5”x3/8” piece of aluminum foil and adhere this around the seam where the yellow and pink cardstock meet. Use Glue Dots to adhere a Hershey’s Kiss to the bottom of the Rolo’s. This is the pencil point.

Feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment if you have any questions, and I'll try to answer them!

Update:  The heart I used is no longer available, but I created a similar one you can download in a new post. Click here.

Do you put glue between each rolo or how do you keep them from sliding out either end? I started making them, but my candy keeps sliding out. lol. I think I missed something.

I made these with a single package of Rolos (they come all rolled together in the candy bar aisle), and just left the wrapper on. The wrapper holds them together.

If you're using individually wrapped Rolos, I'm guessing it would still work, but you would probably need to glue each Rolo together. I've never done it that way, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Maybe use a Glue Dot to hold the Rolos together?

Hope this helps! :)

Rolos I'm sure would be the easiest, but all I had was kisses. It works too. I glued them point to bottom, and then put strips adhesive down my cardstock (which is a heavy weight paper), and rolled tight..worked perfect too! :) Thanks for the cute idea!

Card stock is a slightly thicker than regular writing paper but slightly thinner/lighter than posterboard. Yes, u can purchase it at Wally world In the scrapbooking section. Many pieces are already pre cut for u. Good luck! :)

What about a roll of life savers instead of the rolos?

Where did you find the templates for the heart?

Jaime said...

I think life savers would work... they would just make for a smaller pencil. :)

For those who have asked about the hearts, I posted a sheet of printable hearts you can use here: http://simplyjstudio.blogspot.com/2013/02/valentine-heart-printable.html

Thanks for all your interest and comments!

You can use construction paper also. It's cheaper than card stock but heavy enough to use and any type of round rolled candy will do, certs, lifesavers, mentos etc. You can also use the small packages of rolos and wrap them in a small piece of aluminum foil first. Just made space ships like this for my kids birthday party. Wish I had seen this before now but may do them for Easter and just change the card. REally cute idea.

Found this as I was looking for something for my son's class (something not too childish -- he's 11) ... I think I'll try this and add "I'll get 'write' to the point...You are an awesome valentine!"

Are there any subsitutes for the rolos?
Unfortunally, they do not sell rolos here

Such an adorable idea! I'm going to make these for my lil loves, I'm going to use rolled mints like mentos or lifesavors, trying NOT to use candy. I was also going to make my tag saying "I can't make a mistake loving you". Thanx for sharing!! HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!
